This book is a collection of articles
written by the scholars who conducted
intensive fieldwork in Bangladesh and in
the province of West Bengal of India
during the sixties and seventies of the last
century. In these articles they mainly
narrated their fieldwork experiences
which seemed to be extremely
interesting. The authors of this book
mainly followed anthropological method
in their research and described their
pains, encounters and pleasures of their
fieldwork. This book is, therefore,
considered as an important work on
methodological literature of
anthropology. In this edition (second
edition) three new articles have been
added and all the three contributors are
trained anthropologists. However, they
conducted intensive fieldwork in rural
Bangladesh in the recent time following
the same tradition of fieldwork of their
predecessors. Although every fieldwork
is unique, just as every field site; many
experiences are similar and many events
and behavior repeat endlessly in the field.
The previous articles however, remain
unchanged. This work may be considered
as an important addition to advance
research methods in anthropology.
Dr. Anwarullah Chowdhury is a retired
Professor and founder Chairman of the
Department of Anthropology at the University
of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He was also a Professor
and Chairman of the Department of Sociology,
Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and
finally the Vice-Chancellor of the same
University. Professor Chowdhury was a full
time Member of the University Grants
Commission of Bangladesh and later he was a
Visiting Professor at the Minnesota State
University in Mankato, USA during the
academic year 2000-2001. He also served as
the Ambassador of Bangladesh to the Kingdom
of Bahrain in the recent past.
Professor Chowdhury published more than 15
books and a large number of articles in the
national and international journals. More than
25 students completed their M.Phil. and Ph.D.
research under his supervision.
His Ph.D. work A Bangladesh Village: A study
of Social stratification is based on his research
in a village of Dhaka district following the
method of participant-observation. His book
Agrarian social relations and rural
development in Bangladesh was based on his
post-doctoral research at IDS, University of
Sussex, England and it was published by the
Oxford IBH publishing company in 1982,
The present work is an edited volume on the
fieldwork experiences of the scholars who
conducted social anthropological research in
this part of the world.
