Zusammenfassung:During much of the imperial period, the villa remained a fundamental element in the organisation of the territory, carrying out its essential functions as a place of residence and a centre for farming activity. Currently, the archaeological data on our territory enable us to establish a set of patterns that coincide with the proposals of other researchers presented in more global synthesis papers on the evolution and purpose of the villas. Instead of analysing the characteristics in detail, in this paper we would like to highlight that during the fifth century the predominant role of villas began to fade until it disappeared completely. In some cases, this final process was preceded by a functional transformation of many spaces. Former residential units were adapted to new production or craft activities and also converted into small funerary areas. This process of abandoning villas was associated with new forms of population that, gradually and following completely different patterns, completely changed the face of the rural landscape.
