Gradina on Jelica Mountain. Thirty Years of Archaeological Research
(1984-2014)
Summary
Situated around 110km southwest of Belgrade, as the crow flies, and in the vicinity of the modern city of Cacak, Gradina (846m) is one of the dominant peaks of the mountain Jelica, offering a magnificent view spanning tens of kilometres over the whole surrounding landscape (Rudnik, Ravna Gora, the West Morava river valley, Dragacevo, and further). Therefore, it is little wonder that life existed on it, with interruptions, for over three millenniums, from prehistoric times to the Early Middle Ages, particularly during turbulent times, when man was looking for a place to live, in areas already naturally protected by their position.
The augmentative meaning conveyed in the name “Gradina” itself suggests the remains of a bigger settlement and, as demonstrated by the archaeological excavations, it did, in actual fact, exist in this location. The widespread legends about the Damned Jerina (Prokleta Jerina) building this town, as well as many others, were not confirmed. Life in it had ceased to exist long before she be-
came the wife of Despot Djuradj Brankovic (15th century).
Shortly after the re-establishment of the Serbian state in the first half of the 19th century, Gradina became the subject of interest for devotees of historic monuments, about which Delifna Rajic writes. Thus, Gradina represents one of the first archaeological sites in Serbia. After a number of visits, reports and accidental discoveries, the archaeological excavations finally started in 1984. The excavations, with some interruptions, have continued until the present day, under the leadership of the below signed, first within the project of the Institute of Archaeology, and then the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. After the previous, less extensive undertakings of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of Serbia in Belgrade, architectural conservation works on Gradina were re-established by the Institute for Cultural Heritage Preservation in Kraljevo this year. Gradina is a cultural monument protected by Law. In a scientific sense, it is recognised outside the borders
I
of our country. Numerous reports and studies have been published on the subject, including a monograph a few years ago. It has been considered in a variety of scientific syntheses, both domestic and foreign. The exhibition organised by the National Museum in Cacak provides an opportunity for all those interested to obtain a concise insight into the results of previous research, as well as to present a relevant range of finds, some of which are displayed for the first time.
The oldest traces of human habitation on Gradina date back to the middle of the 3rd millennium BC, from the Late Eneolithic, as was determined by Aleksandar Bulatovic (see the article in the catalogue). It continued throughout the Early Bronze Age and reached its greatest intensity in the prehistoric periods of the Early and Late Iron Age (1 l/10-7th, 6/5th century BC). At the time, we can say with great certainty, that there was a townlike settlement. Most finds comprise fragments of diversely decorated ceramic vessels and, to a lesser degree, stone chipped tools. Later phases of life on Gradina, in particular the building of the town in the 6ch century, destroyed a big portion of the prehistoric remains, so that the only intact layer from these epochs has been found on the northern slopes of the Upper Town (Gornjigrad).
From the end of the Late Iron Age (6/5th century BC) to the Late Antiquity, that is the Early Byzantine Period, when a new town was built on Gradina (6th century), a lot of time had passed. Only rare finds from the Roman times (with the exception of Roman spolia used during the 6th and the beginning of the 7th century) testify to occasional dwelling in this place, which left no other material traces such as the remains of buildings and
the like. A certain dilemma arises when dating the first construction phase of Basilica A, which could, according to the discovered parts of the inscription interpreted by Snezana Ferjancic (see the article in the catalogue), originate from the 4th or 5th century. The presence of Roman money alongside that of the Early Byzantine should not be confusing (money finds were processed by Miloje Vasic on this occasion), considering that, due to its metal value, it could have been in circulation in later centuries, as noted in other Early Byzantine sites.
The construction of a new, large fortified settlement functioning as the central place in the region, which could, with certain reservations, be called a town, is most likely connected to the grandiose construction undertaking of Emperor Justinian I (527-565), described by his chronicler Procopius. Being situated on one of the peaks of Jelica, not only by virtue of its position but by its structure as well, this town was, by and large, different from previous Roman towns built on plains. Its base was irregular, adapted to the configuration of the terrain, which was in accordance with the Early Byzantine fortification principles, particularly used in so-called hilltop fortifications. The choice of such a location was undoubtedly the consequence of the insecurity caused by barbarian invasions during the Great Migrations.
Within the town, separately defended areas were noted (the Upper Town and the northern and southern Lower Town), whilst it remains unknown whether the area on the western slopes was protected by ramparts, as sketched by Felix Kan-itz. The site comprises an area of around 22ha, including the necropolis near Basilica B. Up to now, apart from parts of the ramparts, towers and gates,

twenty secular buildings have been discovered. In addition, the remnants of five churches have also been discovered, one of which (Basilica C) had a baptistery and was decorated with stone furniture and with painted wall decorations, as described by Marko Kaplatevic. Of course, these are only a small part of the total number of buildings (residences, common dwellings and workshops). Even the number of churches does not have to be final, considering their numbers in other Early Byzantine settlements. These buildings were all built of stone, mostly fixed with mortar, and occasionally used Roman spolia (compare the articles of Snezana Ferjancic and Marko Kaplarevic) and, among other things, figural capitals which decorated Building
I-IV within the Upper Town. Most of them had glazed windows and some of them had a sewerage system (Building I-IV). A great number of movable finds came from them and their surroundings; mainly ceramics, but other artefacts as well, a selection of which is presented in this catalogue. In their own unique way, these objects testify to the life once led in this place, the supraregional connections and trade (North African and other amphorae, processed by Vesna Bikic), personal equipment, tools and the professions of the town’s population. The finds of raw materials, partially finished products and tools, reveal a series of artisanal activities. Thus, the processing of iron ore, the exploitation of quarries along with stone carving and masonry, bone and horn treatment, wood processing as well as weaving and other activities, were testified. Cattle breeding played a significant role in the highland regions, together with agriculture, but which was less intensive than in the lowlands. Sporadic finds point to activities such as fishing and viticul-
ture outside the immediate proximity of the town. In the Early Byzantine Period, in the north of 11-lyricum, fortified settlements assumed the role of economic centres, as had previously been the case with villae rusticae.
Gradina on Jelica must also have been an administrative centre of the region, but it could not be placed, with any certainty, in any of the known provinces (Moesia Prima, Dalmatia?). Perica Spe-har wrote about other fortified settlements in the surrounding area. Sparse finds of defensive and offensive weapons indicate the presence of armed people - whether they were a regular military unit, local militia or a mercenary unit, ‘foederati’, remains open to question. For the time being, due to the lack of the town s name, it remains equally unclear whether a bishop resided in it, which cannot be excluded as a fact, and, considering the number of churches as well as the discovery of a reliquary, whether it might have been, among other things, a religious centre as well. Certain clues lead us to consider the possible presence of different Christian confessional groups. Nonetheless, in a dominant position, at the very top of Gradina, was Basilica E, visible from afar as a symbol of religious and civilisational affiliation, as was the case with other concurrent settlements (Caricin grad, Zlata and others). Material culture is typical of the Romani, that is ‘Romaioi’, an autochthonous population, although within it there is also a small number of objects that are typical of areas populated by Germanic tribes, especially the Gepids, who might have come here as refugees after being defeated by the Langobards and Avars in 567. The anthropological analyses of skeletal remains additionally point to these conclusions. Miloje Vasic writes about the
m
significance of Gradina on Jelica in the Early Byzantine archaeology of Serbia.
At the end of the 6th, or the beginning of the 7th century, the town was devastated by a great fire which left its obvious traces in many places. A sudden cataclysm prevented a systematic evacuation and thereby preserved numerous household items and equipment for archaeology. Thus, this still nameless town experienced the same destiny as many others all over Illyricum, caused mainly by the Avar invasions and Slavic settling.
During the Early Middle Ages, on the ruins of the fortified complex, a new settlement was built. Authors’ opinions differ regarding the start of this new settling. While some date this process back to the late 7th century, the presented opinion of Vesna Bikic suggests a period in the region of the 9th cen-
tury. The scarce and insufficiently studied ceramic finds of the aforementioned period, combined with the inability to conduct appropriate scientific analyses, gave rise to these circumstances, which will change in the future. In any case, this pottery was made in a way typical of areas populated by the Slavs, with the sporadic presence of typically Bulgarian ceramics.
There is no doubt that Gradina on Jelica is one of the keys to understanding the processes which dominated in the Balkans during the Early Byzantine Period, at the time of the Great Migrations and the Early Middle Ages. A fact worth mentioning is that in this very period, on the ruins of the Roman Empire, the fundamental formation of Europe, as we know it today, happened.
