Summary
In the 18th century, under the influence of European tradition, there are initiatives
for building public monuments in the Habsburg Monarchy regions populated by the
Serbs. In the Serbian population under the Ottoman Empire, such initiatives emerge
earlier, but their realisation comes much later, when the historical circumstances
become favourable. The Serbian memorial cultural sees its heyday only in the 19th
century, when memorial forms become diverse, like the military cemeteries, obe-
lisk-like monuments, memorial temples, sculptures, memorial fountains, structures
and other. One of the earliest examples and a crucial point in building new types of
memorials, interlacing religious and national symbols, is a monument to the fallen
liberators of Belgrade in 1806 in Karadjordje's Park, Belgrade.
In shaping the memorial complexes or individual monuments, there was a need
to express an envisioned idea in a strong architectural and/or sculptural and artistic
manner, an idea of glorifying the victim, of heroisation of an individual and the na-
tion. However, as modest material means were available to both the government
and the individuals, numerous memorials were built in simple forms and until the
times after the First World War, there were quite few examples of monumental ar-
chitectural or sculptural forms.
Memorial forms and the memorial culture, nurtured in the first half of the 20th
century, continue with the 19th century tradition. The first memorials that were es-
tablished in honour of the First World War were the military cemeteries, memori-
al chapels and churches. After 1918, the New Cemetery (Novo Groblje) of Belgrade
becomes the most important memorial complex dedicated to the First World War
when in 1931 a Monument and a Memorial Ossuary was built in memory of the libera-
tors of Belgrade 1914-1918. Also, a Russian Ossuary and a Monument to Tsar Nicholas
II Romanov and the Fallen Soldiers - the Memorial Ossuary of the Russian Glory was
built, along with several other military cemeteries in honour of the allied armies, as
well as those of the occupiers.
Also, one of the most significant works is the Memorial Church of St. Demetrios,
Lazarevac, in whose crypt lie the soldiers fallen in the Battle of Kolubara.
The most important memorial group consists of great works of public figural
monuments, erected in urban environment. In the interwar period, all over Yugo-
slavia and Serbia, a great number of figural and sculptural memorials were built,
honouring the memory of the First World War figures or events. In order to make
the best selection, expert committees were formed, while realisation was entrusted
to the outstanding Serbian and Yugoslav sculptors of that time. Within the Belgrade

public monuments stock, we encounter names like Ivan Meštrović and Djordje Jova-
novič, whose works mark the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century.
A practice of building warrior monuments was a general tendency of honouring
the memory of the First World War in European countries of that period, and was a
form of memory démocratisation. A great number of military memorials represent
one or several figures of a Serbian soldier, along with symbols of fight and victory.
Not so often we encounter monuments erected to outstanding military leaders, like
a Monument to Voivode Vuk Popovič. Also, there are few figurai representations of
allegoric personifications, quite characteristic to a language of the 19th century visual
culture, like the two Ivan Mestrovic's works on the Belgrade Fortress, the Victor and
Monument of Gratitude to France.
Among the monuments built in the interwar period, there is the Monument to
the Unknown Soldier on Avala Mt., the most representative and significant Mestro-
vic’s work, as well as one of the most important military memorials, built after a
European practice of the monuments to the Unknown Hero.
Besides the grand memorials in the urban Belgrade area, there are those of local
character, erected at the outskirts of the city, but showing extraordinary craftsman-
ship and artistic skill. Those are mostly in the form of an obelisk or memorial plaques,
commemorating the fallen heroes. On the other hand, traditional memorial forms
include a practice of building memorial fountains.
Most of the memorials were built in the interwar period. However, after the Sec-
ond World War honouring the WWI memory of significant figures and events contin-
ues, particularly in 1980s and 1990s, when a great number of monuments was dedi-
cated to distinguished military leaders. Such a modern type of commemoration did
not refer only to building new monuments but also to the endeavours to preserve,
renew and restore the extant ones. The Belgrade heritage Institute has recorded
several cultural properties highly valorised as cultural and historical structures or
monuments of the most distinguished figures and events of the First World War.
An overall view shows that the First World War memorials in Belgrade are a syn-
thesis of the 19th century Serbian memorial culture traditional trends and influences
of modern European memorial streams in the interwar period practice.

Sous l'influence des traditions européennes, au cours du XVIIle siècle, dans les
zones habités par des Serbes dans la monarchie des Habsbourgs, apparaît pour la
première fois l'initiative à élever des monuments publics. Parmi les Serbes de l'Em-
pire ottoman, l'idée d'élever des monuments de guerre se produit plus tôt, mais la
réalisation vient plus tard, une fois que les circonstances historiques l'ont permis. Le
plein développement de mémorial de la culture serbe n'a eu lieu qu'au cours du XIXe
siècle, quand la pluralité des formes de commémoration a été constitué: cimetières
militaires, monuments sous la forme d'un obélisque, des temples commémoratifs,
des sculptures et monuments, fontaines, mémoriaqux et d'autres installations. Un
des premiers exemples de ce nouveau type des monuments historiques dans lequel
envahissent le symbolisme religieux et national est le monument aux rebelles tom-
bés pour la libération de Belgrade en 1806, dans le Parc de Karadjordje à Belgrade.
Dans la conception de l'entité du memorial ou des monuments individuels, il est
nécessaire d'exprimer d'une manière forte une idée architectural et/ou sculptu-
rale-artistique, une idée de glorification de la victime, de l'héroïsation de l'individu
et de la nation. Néanmoins, les modestes ressources matérielles qui étaient dis-
ponibles à l'État et aux individus ont conditionné que des nombreux monuments
soient élevés dans des formes plus simples et jusqu'après la Première Guerre mon-
diale, les exemples de la forme architecturale monumentale ou sculptural sont très
rares.
Les formes du mémorial et de la culture de commémoration qui sont cultivées
au cours de la première moitié du XXème siècle représentent une continuation de
la tradition constitué au cours du XIXe siècle. Les premiers monuments consacrés
à la Première Guerre mondiale ont été liés à la construction et l'aménagement des
cimetières militaires, ainsi que des chapelles et des églises commémoratives. Après
1918, le nouveau cimetière de Belgrade est devenu l'unité des mémoriaux la plus
importante consacrée à la commémoration de la Première Guerre mondiale et des
défenseurs avec le Monument et la Crypte commémoratifs consacrés aux Défenseurs
de Belgrade de 1914 à 1918, construits emg3i, et la Crypte russe et le monument consa-
cré à rempereur Nicolas II Romanov et les soldats russes tombés - la Crypte de la gloire
russe, ainsi que l'aménagement de plusieurs cimetières militaires des alliés et des
conquérents.
Un des monuments commémoratifs les plus importants est aussi une église
consacrée à Saint-Démétrius, à Lazarevac. Dans sa crypte sont enterrés les soldats
tombés dans la bataille de Kolubara.
Le groupe le plus important des monuments sont des uvres représentatives

de monuments figuraux publics qui ont été construits dans des zones urbaines. Un
grand nombre de sculptures et monuments figuratives ont été contruits dans la pé-
riode entre les deux guerres en Yougoslavie et en Serbie, en souvenirs des personnes
ou d événements spécifiques de la Première Guerre mondiale. Des commissions de
spécialistes ont été formées afin de sélectionner les meilleures solutions artistiques,
et ce sont les sculpteurs serbes et yougoslaves les plus éminents de I époque qui
étaient en charge de sa réalisation. Dans le cadre du fond des monuments publics de
Belgrade se distinguent les noms d'Ivan Mestrovic et Djordje Jovanovic, deux artiste
qui ont marqué la fin du XIX siècle et la première moitié du XX siècle.
La pratique d élever des monuments aux guerriers faisait partie d une tendance
générale marquant la mémoire de la Première Guerre mondiale dans les pays euro-
péens de i époque et était une sorte de démocratisation de la mémoire. Un grand
nombre de monuments militaires représentent une figures d'un soldat serbe (ou
plusieurs), avec des symboles de la lutte et de la victoire. Des monuments consacrés
aux comandants militaries éminents, comme celui au duc Vuk Popovic, n'étaient pas
très comuns. Rare étaient aussi les présentations figurales des personnifications al-
légoriques, caractéristiques de la langue de la culture visuelle du XIXe siècle, comme
c'était le cas dans les deux uvres monumentales d'Ivan Mestrovic à la forteresse
de Belgrade: le Monument au Vainqueur et le Monument de la reconnaissance à la
France.
Des monuments érigés à la période entre les deux guerres, celui consacré à l'hé-
ros inconnu sur Avala - l'oeuvre la plus monumentale et importante de Mestrovic,
est l'un des monument militaires les plus importants, construit d'après les modèles
de l'édification de monuments du soldat inconnu dans les pays européens.
En plus des uvres commémoratives dans la région de Belgrade, dans les parties
périphériques de la ville ont été construits des monuments du caractère local, qui im-
pliquent souvent un haut degré de savoir-faire et de l'art. Il s'agit principalement de
la forme d'un obélisque monumental, ainsi que des plaques commémoratives consa-
crées aux guerriers tombés au combat. Des formes commémoratives traditionnelles,
la pratique d'élever une fontaine commémorative a été également favorisé.
Le plus grand nombre de monuments érigés dans la période entre les deux
guerres mondiales, mais aussi après la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale continue
de marquer la commémoration des personnes et des événements importants de
la Première Guerre mondiale, en particulier dans les années 80 et 90 du XX siècle,
quand un grand nombre de mémoriaux consacrés aux éminents commandants mi-
litaries ont été érigés. Ce type moderne de conservation ne se réfère pas exclusive-
ment à la construction de nouveaux monuments, mais aussi au travail sur la conse-
rvation, la rénovation et la restauration de ceux qui existent, et l'Institut pour la

protection des monuments culturels a déterminé des biens culturels dont la base de
révaluation était un valeur historique et culturel des bâtiments ou des monuments
qui avaient été liés aux personnes et les événements les plus importants de la pé-
riode de la Première Guerre mondiale.
En general, les mémoriaux de la Première Guerre mondiale à Belgrade sont une
synthèse des flux traditionnels de la culture des mémoriaux serbe du XIXe siècle et
l’impact des courants contemporains de flux commémoratifs européens dans la pé-
riode entre les deux guerres.
