adam_text | THE SERBIAN OCCUPATION AND
REPRESSIVE POLITICS IN ANAMORAVA
REGION DURING 1912-1915
CONCLUSION
Throughout their whole history, the year 1912 until
1915 were the hardest and bloodiest period for Albanian
people of Anamorava region that were also known by the
people and occupied territories as the years of first Serbia.
Exactly when freedom was expected, in autumn of 1912, the
Albanian territories were affected by the storms of the
disastrous Balkan War One.
The end of the balkanise wars was followed with great
ends. Retired to its old capital in Adrianopoja, the Ottoman
Empire was not anymore a European power and left Europe.
The Balkan wars were bloody and expensive. For ten
years of fight, only during the six weeks of the first Balkan
war and four weeks how the second Balkan war lasted,
around 200.000 fighters were killed excluding civils, and
thousands of victims of cholera, typhus and dysentery. In
this regard, Leon Trocki wrote that only the pen of Dante
234
MA.Sc. Nexhmedin Z. Bardhi
would be able to describe correctly the road that comes from
Lozengrad, only its mysterious talent would be able to re-
create the horrors of cold morass on the lines and dregs whe-
re the disabled and mangled bodies of dead people.
The Saint Stefan treaty expanded the influence of Ru-
ssia deep in the Balkans and was orientedparticularly to-
wards Aegean Sea. This influence gave the opportunity to
Russia to rule the Balkan territories and get to Mediterra-
nean coast. Consequently, the Russian tendencies over Bal-
kans turned as unacceptable for Austro-Hungary as well as
for Great Britain. For that reasonthe Congress of Berlin was
invited, with the main purpose to set the balance between
two powers of the region: Austro-Hungary and Russia.
There needs to be highlighted that the tragic sizes and
dramatic tones of these events in the Balkans have an early
origin. They have emerged at the beginning of the XEX ce-
ntury and later on were followed by myths and legends of
the past such as: Great Bulgaria, Great Serbia, Great Ro-
mania, the Myth of Pan Hellenic, Great Montenegro that
have impacted an aggressive nationalism followed by re-
venge and disastrous conflicts. At this point tragedies and
events were written, starting with XLX century that still ca-
use negative consequences.
Due to consequences of Second Balkan War there
happend a new sharing of power in the world. As case in
point Romania broke away from central alliance that was
founded in 1879 and started to get closer with the USSR,
while Bulgaria become connected with the central Austro-
German block.
The Balkan wars only increased the contradictions be-
tween nations andaccelerated the World War One.
PUSHTIMI DHE POLITIKA REPRESIVE SERBE NE ANAMORAVE...235
Considering that Balkan Wars were seen as the reason
behind starting of World War One, I agree with the claim:
“Even that technically it’s indisputable that the box of spark
powder for the World War One came from the Balkans,
very occasionally you will find historians that will pretend
that as a reason”.
So, the most important factor, as could be noticed
from last Balkan Wars, Was the agressive nationalism a
nationalism of tribe tendencies that described the politco-
military opponent as a scary enemy and irreparable.
Typically every justification of particular governments
faces with a deaf wall. “The megalomania of national ideal”
allowed no space for reasoning and compromises. Nevert-
heless, in both wars the clashes were extremely bloody, and
no matter how glorious the war between Ottoman Empire
and Balkan allies was described, it was nothing more than a
chapter filled with dreads.
As a war history the consequences and moral impacts
were horrible. Nations that used to be allies and prayed the
god to give them freedom, suddenly started to hate each
other to death. The hate, national anger and mutual sus-
picion were sufficient to start and move forward the most
brutal and useless war of the time. Those who fought side by
side in Adrianopoja now were ready to kill and torture each
other.
The end of Balkan wars consists in a short period of
time that was comprised with important historical events but
also tragic for Albanian national cause. The declaration of
the independence of Albania was heroic and the greatest
event in the whole history of the Albanian nation. Never-
theless, at the same time it was tragic, because from that
period the greatest violation of human and national rights of
236
MA.Sc. Nexhmedin Z. Bardhi
Albanians started, and almost the half of the population
remained out of the declared state in Vlora. For the part of
the population that was left out of Albania itstarted the fatal
period, the reflection of which was transmitted on new ge-
nerations, that remained under Serbian captivity and Greek
megalomania.
Therefore, in that part of unfree Albania, the soldiers
and Serbian-Montenegrin paramilitaries, committed crimes
that Europe had never heard since the time of Huns arrival,
vandals and aver, and Genghis Khan.Anyway, even the
worse miseries couldn’t eradicate this strong race. As Ko-
sovo as an Albanian land was denied by European powers to
hold in its arms a new bloodsucker oppression comparing to
the previous one-the Serbian militarist oppression. Based on
developments and genocide of Serb-Montenegrin that was
committed against Albanians, you can have the impression
that the Albanian people of Kosovo were the bravest people
in the world. Furthermore, with the aid of Russia, Serbia and
Montenegro were able to create their colonial state borders
while committing unseen crimes over Albanians.
After reviewing numerous material facts we concur
that some of the main causes of the rapid decline of the
Albanian territories under occupation of neighboring states
were:The Albanian people, alone and without any assista-
nce, were severely battered in the wars with a large state of
tens of millions of people and because of centuries of
accumulated hatred against the Ottomans, that grudge could
not be eliminated immediately over a period of one or two
months, which could allow an Albanian-Ottoman block,
which in a historical perspective would be suicide for the
Albanians.
PUSHTIMI DHE POLITIKA REPRESIVE SERBE NË ANAMORAVË... 237
In that direction we have to recognize that the inte-
ntions of the insidious Balkan states were assisted by such a
state of the albanian people at that time. Everyone was
against the Albanian people and at that time the were left
without any allies within the Balkans and without the help of
any great power.
Therefore the Ottoman conquest of five centuries had
canned medieval conservatism, ruralizim of the Albanian
society, possession of any trend in braking for cultural
regeneration of society and civilization as a whole. Great
Powers in this way, instead of opening pores for a nation on
its way to renewal and European citizenship, prompted it
territorially, cut off the main arteries and fed factors that
easily make manipulated and controllable people historically
prevented its development path.
- Immediate attack from all leading directions of Al-
banian territory by four Balkan states was impossible to
withstand by the Albanian fighters.
Albanians did not have their own state yet, which ma-
de it difficult not only for proper organization and support of
fighters, even though as devoted patriots a heroic struggle
was made and an admirable fortitude against armies of the
alliance from all directions of their penetration, where it was
greed and their determination to liberate their fellow-pe-
ople accompanied with the thirst for territory. And, as some
researchers point out, after the new states we formed, they
had no combat experience. Most of the population was
inactive peasants, indifferent and not used to fighting. Once,
the true fighters among the Balkan peoples were Albanians.
However, Bulgarians, Serbs and Montenegrins, thanks to the
successful management of economic resources and educa-
tion for the benefit of the military in the forty-year state
238
MA.Sc. Nexhmedin Z. Bardhi
formation period managed to create a military tradition,
starting from scratch.
- Intense Propaganda of neighboring countries, coup-
led with threats, killings, blackmail, false promises, pouring
large amounts of money and corruption of some individuals
affected their national torpor.
- The support that the four Balkan stated had by the
Great Powers, primarily from Russia, France, England and
their denying attitude towards the Albanian national cause.
In comparison with the period before the Balkan wars,
territorial and demographic changes, after the Peace of Bu-
charest, on August 9, 1913, expressed in % were: Bulgaria
won 29% more territory and 3% population , Greece 68%
territory and 67% more population, Montenegro 62% te-
rritory and 100% more population, Serbia 82% more area
and 55% more population. And according to the newspaper
Obzor , 24, XII. 1913, Zagreb writes: Serbia from the Bal-
kan wars in territorial perspective increased almost by
double. She approaches the Aegean Sea and the Adriatic
Sea, wins fertile provinces, common borders with Monte-
negro, providing free transportation in Thessaloniki. Before
the Balkan wars it had 48,803 km2 and 2,911 meters. 701
people (some 2.7 million inhabitants), and after the Balkan
wars of 87,358 square km with 4 393. 315 inhabitants.
In fact, in these wars the map of the four Balkan states
changed radically in their favor, but the great damage was
suffered by the Albanian cause, having half a thousand years
of historical people and territory cut off in the Balkans.
So most of the Albanian people during the Balkan
wars suffered bitter disappointments.
PUSHTIMI DHE POLITIICA REPRESIVE SERBE NE AN AM ORA VE... 239
Wrong solutions for Albania after the Balkan wars
created tragic consequences being felt in the possible dis-
memberment of social integration, cultural, economic, edu-
cational, communications and relations with neighbors and
with the world which were constructed for centuries: the
reduction of spiritual and material capacity these people;
insulation and reduce the overall weight of the Albanian
state in the Balkans; the most impenetrable border in Europe
between the two parts of people with countless family tra-
gedies; Replacing a bondage (Ottoman Empire) with ano-
ther for more than half of the people; gangrene of a typical
ratio between European colonial; permanent political and
military destabilization of the direct region. Consequences
of these injustices, of course not lead other than the eco-
nomic impoverishment of entire regions Albanian mountain
disruptions due to traditional relationships, maintaining se-
mi-conservatism further medieval era modem, keeping
constant internal political uncertainty in the new Albanian
state, further weakening of European cultural nuclides wi-
thin the Albanian nation, a Western Balkans destabilized for
a long time.
It is known that the treatment of the problem of the
Albanian border was not supported in ethnographic consi-
derations, historical, economic, etc., but was made by the
Great Powers in the light of maintaining peace balances in
the region and beyond, or more accurately in the amperi-
shable European concert . In this perspective, the diploma-
cy of the Great Powers sought to deflect the Great War,
which did not turn out so.
This tragedy with Albanian territories occurred when
historical, ethnographic reports, and memorandums existed
not only by elite representatives of the Albanian nation like
240
MA.Sc. Nexhmedin Z. Bardhi
Konica etc., but also from impartial world personalities, who
argued historically the compact ethnic makeup and uninte-
rrupted historical origins of the Albanian people. Thus, in
the memorandum sent by the American missionary Telford
Erikson, who after arguing with historical facts and docu-
ments of the antiquity of Illyrian-Albanian Arbnors, asks
how can this antique land and population be divided among
allies as war booty? Then he continues: We gentlemen
once learned that justice should be the cornerstone of any
lasting order in human society .
The Albanian resistance used to continue during 1912-
1913. But the most organized opposition against Serbian
invaders was the uprising of September 1913 which was
condemned with strong repressive actions. Years 1912-1915
were described as period of crisis not only for the Balkans,
but also for Europe and the whole world in general. From
the time interval point of view it was short, but in fact the
genocide that happened was considered as one of the most
ghastly periods of history of this peninsula, where every
day, week and month horrible events used to happen and in
particular against our people, which also for Anamorava
region was the most painful period of genocide that was
committed by Pan-Slavs and implemented in practise in the
most precise way including all the disreputable projects and
elaborations that were compiled from “Naçertania” of
Garshanin, Vladan Gjorgjeviq that were followed by many
others in progress and were adopted by all Serbian state
regimes regardless, and was recognized as a saint action that
consisted in massacre and genocide against Albanians.
