Zusammenfassung: | Divided by the Word refutes the assumption that the entrenched ethnic divide between South Africa's Zululs ad Xhosas, a divide that turned deadly in the late 1980s, is elemental to both societies. Jochen Arndt reveals how the current distinction between the two groups emerged from a long and complex interplay of indigenous and foreign-born actors, with often diverging ambitions and relationships to the world they shared and the languages they spoke. The earliest roots of the divide lie in the eras of exploration and colonization, when European officials and naturalists classified South Africa's indigenous population on the basis of skin color and language. Later, missionaries collaborated with African intermediaries to translate the Bible into the region's vernaculars, artificially creating distinctions between Zulu and Xhosa speakers. By the twentieth century, these foreign players, along with African intellectuals, designed language-education programs that embedded the Zulu-Xhosa divide in South African consciousness. Using archival sources from three continents written in multiple languages, Divided by the Word offers a refreshing new appreciation for the deep historicity of language and ethnic identity in South Africa while reconstructing the ways in which colonial forces generate and impose ethnic divides with long-lasting and lethal consequences for indigenous populations. -- dust jacket "This book argues that foreign missionaries and their African interlocutors deliberately forged separate Zulu and Xhosa languages in the nineteenth century, tracing the consequences of this imposed linguistic division through the twentieth century"-- |

Uku-Kuluma-Nje": Americans, Africans, and Zulu as a Superior Language -- "Many People . . . Explain This Identity Primarily in Terms of the Language They Speak": The Language-Based Zulu-Xhosa Divide in South African Consciousness -- Epilogue Divided by the Word refutes the assumption that the entrenched ethnic divide between South Africa's Zululs ad Xhosas, a divide that turned deadly in the late 1980s, is elemental to both societies. -- dust jacket "This book argues that foreign missionaries and their African interlocutors deliberately forged separate Zulu and Xhosa languages in the nineteenth century, tracing the consequences of this imposed linguistic division through the twentieth century"-- Geschichte 1500-1990 gnd rswk-swf Sprache (DE-588)4056449-6 gnd rswk-swf Ethnische Identität (DE-588)4153096-2 gnd rswk-swf Xhosa (DE-588)4079422-2 gnd rswk-swf Mission (DE-588)4039567-4 gnd rswk-swf Zulu (DE-588)4079548-2 gnd rswk-swf Südafrika (DE-588)4078012-0 gnd rswk-swf Language and culture / South Africa / History Zulu language / History Zulu (African people) / Ethnic identity Xhosa language / History Xhosa (African people) / Ethnic identity Missionaries / South Africa / History / 19th century South Africa / Ethnic relations / History Langage et culture / Afrique du Sud / Histoire Zoulou (Langue) / Histoire Zoulous / Identité ethnique Xhosa (Langue) / Histoire Xhosa (Peuple d'Afrique) / Identité ethnique Missionnaires / Afrique du Sud / Histoire / 19e siècle Ethnic relations Language and culture Missionaries Xhosa language Zulu language South Africa 1800-1899 History Südafrika (DE-588)4078012-0 g Zulu (DE-588)4079548-2 s Xhosa (DE-588)4079422-2 s Mission (DE-588)4039567-4 s Ethnische Identität (DE-588)4153096-2 s Sprache (DE-588)4056449-6 s Geschichte 1500-1990 z DE-604 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe 978-0-8139-4736-5 |
