Abstract
Ibis
also known as the Hymn of the Kouretes, a Hellenistic cult song that survives in a
Roman Imperial
Hymn as a survival of pre-Greek Cretan religion is challenged, as are the assumptions
on which it is based. A new approach is offered, one which recognizes the Hymn's use
of the rhetorical conventions of the Greek
lyric performance, and which also contextualizes the Hymn's representation of Zeus
within broader Greek religious traditions.
The
two scholarly developments contemporary with its discovery, the evolutionary and
comparative anthropology of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as
applied to the history of religion, and the discovery of the Bronze Age Minoan
civilization in Crete. After an examination of the circumstances of the Hymn's
discovery and publication, the first chapter focuses on the work of Jane Ellen
Harrison, who wrote the first major study of the Palaikastro Hymn and established the
fundamental principles of the interpretation that is still dominant today, although the
universalism
perspective, which locates the prehistoric origins of the Hymn in Crete's distinct
Minoan past.
Chapter Two analyzes the representation of Zeus in the Hymn, focusing on the
two most important features of his alleged pre-Greek identity, his apparent
youthfulness and his power over fertility. A thorough examination of the Hymn's
diction, in light of the rhetorical function of the Hymn's ritual performance, proves
that Zeus was not worshipped as a youth at Palaikastro. Second, Zeus's association
with fertility is shown to be deeply traditional and widespread throughout the Greek
world. The third chapter moves beyond the question of religious continuity in Crete
and examines the Hymn's original Hellenistic performance, bom its style and its dual
iole
initiation ceremony of young male citizens. An epilogue considers the possible
circumstances that led to the Hymn's
charter myth for local identity. A detailed epigraphic and textual appendix completes
the dissertation. |
