John Almon

John Almon (17. Dezember 1737 in Liverpool – 12. Dezember 1805) war ein englischer Journalist, Verleger und Buchhändler, der sich vor allem politischen Themen und zeitgenössischer Gesellschaftskritik widmete. Ihm war u. a. daran gelegen, Parlamentsdebatten der Öffentlichkeit im Druck zugänglich zu machen und über vorgebliche Missstände in der Regierung aufzuklären. Ab 1761 war Almon in London zunächst als Reporter für den ''Gazetteer'' tätig und veröffentlichte ''A Review of Mr. Pitt’s Administration''. Seine Texte fanden Anklang bei der Opposition. Im Jahre 1770 druckte John Almon schließlich einen der berüchtigten ''Briefe des Junius'' nach, was zu einer Anklage und Verurteilung wegen Verbreitung staatsgefährdender Schriften (''seditious libel'') führte.

Während der Amerikanischen Revolution engagierte sich John Almon weiterhin als politischer Autor und Verleger und gab den ''Remembrancer'' heraus. Sein Versuch, ab 1784 die Zeitung ''General Advertiser'' zu etablieren, scheiterte. Außer politischen Schriften veröffentlichte er Biographien und Unterhaltungsliteratur. Seine Korrespondenz mit Oppositionspolitiker John Wilkes, dem er freundschaftlich verbunden war, erschien nach seinem Tod. Veröffentlicht in Wikipedia
