PREFACE
“Long Day’s Journey” into Global World
The book focuses on the Latin and English languages as
a global means of intercultural communication and their role in the
process of Russia’s entry into the global cultural space. An import-
ant feature of the monograph is that it observes the history and cur-
rent state of Latin and English as the languages of the worldwide
communication from the global perspective. The authors of the
book wish to bridge the gap in the research of this field of study.
The first chapter aims to examine the history of the Latin lan-
guage as the language of Christian world and academic sphere of the
earliest European universities. The authors explore Latin as a means
of intercultural communication in Europe with a span from its ap-
pearance as the language of the Latins tribe (Latini) to the period of
the 18th - 19th centuries when it was replaced by the national languag-
es. Centuries-long spread of the Latin language and its importance
in some areas of education and intellectual life of the people around
the world nowadays show the special role of the Latin that Joseph
Farrell emphasizes in the book “Latin Language and Latin Culture:
from ancient to modem times” (2001): “the role of Latin as a civ-
ilizing force: an instrument for ordering the disorderly, standard-
izing the multiform, correcting or silencing the inarticulate”1. The
authors trace the establishment of the Latin language in Russia at the
end of 17th - the middle of 18th centuries as the language of world
communication, education and science, a universal means of com-
munication for all educated people. “In scholis non nisi Latine” -
“Nothing but Latin in schools” - such a principle was applied in
schools in those days around the world, including Russia - the Slav-
ic-Greek-Latin Academy in Moscow, where Lomonosov studied.
The second chapter examines the Latin language in the cultural
processes of Russia in 17th — 21st centuries. The book illuminates

that the study of the Latin language from the 17th century has pro-
moted, in particular, the development of translation practice, ac-
quisition of scientific, technical, administrative, social and political
terminology, which is distinguished by its laconism, accuracy and
richness. In 1755 the first Russia’s university - Moscow Universi-
ty - was founded by decree of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. Mikhail
Lomonosov made the first curricula for it, and the half of them was
in Latin. Since the formation of the first university, the university
education in Russia began to spread, based on the study of classical
languages, including Latin, and classical literature. The authors of
the book provide historical evidence that a significant part of a uni-
versity course subjects was taught in Latin by foreigner professors,
and communication with them was in Latin as well. The chapter
examines the controversial topic about the history of Latin in 20th
century when after the October Revolution it was excluded from
educational programs. The revival of interest in ancient languages
began only in the late 20th century, together with the revival of clas-
sical education in Russia. However, despite the interest to the Latin
language among Russian academic community, the authors of the
book delineate the lack of effective results in its revival beyond the
use of Latin in specialized nomenclature and terminology.
The third chapter covers the study of the English language as
a means of intercultural communication. The authors of the mono-
graph use historical, geographical, and socio-cultural approach-
es to the study of English as a global means of communication.
Strong position of English as a world language-communicator
is practically assured by the most researchers. “The Routledge
Companion to Global Popular Culture” (2014) determines Global
English as “a form of popular culture”2. British academic David
Crystal considers English language “an apt symbol for the themes
of globalization, diversification, progress and identity”2.

The fourth chapter raises important questions concerning the
causes and nature of the spread of English as the global language
of communication - Global English - in present-day Russia. The
authors study language hybridization in the texts of modem litera-
ture (V. Pelevin, S. Minayev) and mass culture (O. Robski), as well
as in everyday urban life.
The book draws attention to a wide range of scientific prob-
lems, which may be important for understanding the linguistic and
cultural development of countries in the context of global trends.
This study provides new insights into the evolution of the two
global human languages, Latin and English, delineating their de-
velopment as a means of intercultural communication in different
historical periods. The monograph invites readers to look at on-
going processes of language convergence and conversion on the
“long day’s journey” of humankind into Global World.
