SUMMARY This edition is a description of important archaeo logical artifacts found at the barrows (kurgāns) of the Scythian time at the territory of the Middle Don (Voro nezh and Belgorod regions of the Russian Federation) by researchers from Saint-Petersburg and Moscow during last 120 years. According to our opinion, the presented book is intended primarily for specialists in the sphere of archaeology, anthropology, ancient (Early Iron age) art and history of Eastern Europe, precisely as to the cul ture of Scythian nomads inhabited the forest-steppe and steppe zones of south Eastern Europe at the 1st millenni um BC. But without any doubt, there are many general readers interested in these subjects as well. Thus, we hope that a wide audience (including museum collabora tors and college students) will find our work useful and informative. The Scythian period, 7th ֊ 4th centuries BC, is the most evocative epoch in the past of peoples and tribes who occupied the vast territories of Eurasia between the Tuva — Altai mountains on the east and the ThracoMacedonia on the west. However, according to the infor mation of some antique authors, the proper Scythians (or “European Scythians”) lived in the steppe and forest steppe areas of the northern Black Sea coast, between Danube and Don (Tanais) rivers. We know not so much about the true history of Scyth ians. From the Greek authors and especially from Hero dotus (5th century BC), who wrote about this in greater detail than any other classic scholars, it is known that the Scythians were Iranian-speaking nomads, who had
migrated to the northern Black Sea coast from “distant Asia”. They could dislodge or subjugate the native popu lation and during at most 400 years the Scythians were holders of these rich territories. By the end of the 7th - beginning of the 6th centuries BC some first permanent Greek colonies (city-states) emerged on the northern and eastern shores of the Black Sea near area controlled by the Scythians. From that time the impact of the brilliant Hellenic civilization be came a steady fact in the development of local “barbar ians”. Greek craftsmen and merchants rather quickly established the most wide and profitable relations with native population. It is true, that the Scythians had very close and inten sive connections with the Classic World, However, their contribution to the treasure house of human civilization was so great not only owing to their role as distributors of some elements of sophisticated Hellenic culture to the depths of the immense territory of Eurasia, but also be cause they themselves created original and rather ad vanced culture. The famous Scythian “triad” - the perfect types of armament, effective horse-harness, the distinc tive brilliant art of so-called “animal style” ֊ were wide ly expanded among the nomadic and sedentary tribes of enormous areas from the northern border of China to the modern Hungary.
ШВёЖW ЖЖ ^ШШЙЖ^ Ä® Therefore, the Scythian theme always was the cen tral and preferable one in Russian archaeology during at least last 250 years. Nevertheless, although archaeolo gists have uncovered a great deal of information about the Scythians (after excavation of thousands of kurgāns and dozens of sites), they till now linger more in shadow than light. Among the numerous problems demanding the quick resolving we can mention on such as the origin of the Scythians, the true time of forming their state, its character and, especially, the reasons for their sudden and rapid fall at the end of the 4th — beginning of the 3rd century BC. And only more intensive archaeological studies could help in resolving these acute and important questions. But after the fall of the USSR a majority of archaeologi cal monuments connected with the past of the Scythians remained within the borders of independent Ukraine. As to Russia, the Scythian antiquities (kurgāns and hill forts of so-called “European Scythians” - in accordance with the understanding of Classic geography, Don = Ta nais is the real frontier between Europe and Asia) can be find only at the Don river basin - Lower and Middle, from Voronezh at the north to Rostov-on-Don at the south. We are speaking below only about the first of men tioned regions - the territory of the Middle Don. The Mid dle Don was the key area of this frontier land of the Great Scythia (according to the Herodotus, the eastern border of the Scythian kingdom passed exactly along the Don river). The Scythians were invaders in this region, they
occupied it and formed during the 5th - 4th centuries BC the most north-eastern outskirts of the Scythia. The Don (Tanais) was in these times true crossroads of many important trade routes of international significance. For example, through this territory passed the famous north-eastern trade from the north Black Sea coast to the Ural and Altai (“gold-seeking caravans with seven interpreters”). The Middle Don region is very rich archaeologically: there are numerous barrows of various periods (includ ing the Scythian time), open sites and hill-forts. Accord ing to its environmental conditions the Middle Don re gion in general belongs to the forest-steppe zone. This territory is a vast hilly plane in some places with rather dense leaf-leaving forests and irrigated with numerous rivers and streams. In general, the ecological capacity of forest-steppe zone is considerably higher than the neighbor natural-geographic zones. Therefore, this area was exploited intensively in the past by various ethnic groups and tribes, which had different models of subsist ence. There were excellent conditions for the develop ment of hunting, fishing and plant collecting from one side and no less favorable ones for a progress of cattlebreeding and agriculture (predominance of fertile black soils) - from the other. As a result, the Middle Don re gion was densely populated from the most remote times. During the 5th ֊ 4th BC there existed a local variant of the brilliant Scythians culture at this territory. The scientific excavations begun there about 125 130 years ago (in the beginning of 20th
century) and now we have information of more than 250 Scythian kur gāns, 15 fortified and 20 open sites. Some words about
history of archaeological studies in this region. The lo cal Scythian burial mounds ֊ Chastye and Mastiugino groups are investigated during passed 120 years and gave us the true masterpieces of “barbarian” and antique art (among them there is the famous silver vessel with scenes from Scythian life ֊ kurgan 3, Chastye). During the pre-revolutionary (before October 1917) period the collaborators of the Imperial Archaeological Commission A.A. Spitsyn and N.E. Makarenko during 1905-1908 years excavated several rich burial mounds near Mas tiugino village (60 km to south from Voronezh); and the representatives of the Voronezh Scientific Archive Com mission (S.E. Zverev, V.N. Tevyashov, A.J. Martinovich, I.M. Savelov) in 1910-1915 uncovered 13 Scythian kur gāns in the Chastye group (northern outskirts of Voron ezh). In 1954 year, the archaeological research of the Mid dle Don area became the principal aim of the Voronezh Scythian forest-steppe expedition of the Institute of ar chaeology of the Academy of Science of the USSR head ed by Dr. Piotr D.
Piotr D. Liberov. During a rather short time, from 1954 to 1975, this expedition wholly uncovered the kurgan groups in Chastye place (41 barrows) and near Mastiugino village (46 barrows). 18 burial mounds were excavated near Ruskaya Trostyanka village and 23 kur gāns near Durovka village. Simultaneously there were discovered and partly explored more than 10 hill-forts of the Scythian period. At the year 1990 the Donskaya archaeological expedi tion (DAE) os the Institute of archaeology Russian acad emy of sciences (Moscow) began its
