The rescue excavations at site
7
in Warzyn
Pierwszy (Nagłowice
commune,
Jędrzejów
district,
Świętokrzyskie
province) were conducted between the 17th and 25th of Sep¬
tember
2009
and were connected with the construction of communal waterworks. The
site is situated upon the
Jędrzejów
Plateau which forms part of the
Małopolska
Upland.
The area around the site is predominantly gently undulating upland landscape, confi¬
ned by the valleys of the
Pilica, Biała Nida, Nida
and Mierzawa rivers [fig.
1-2).
The site
itself is located on the south-western slope of a sandy hill,

m a.s.l.
It was discovered
in March
2000
by Cz. Hadamik and J.
Koj
during a field-walking survey carried out wi¬
thin the framework of the Archaeological Picture of Poland project.
Excavations were conducted by
Pracownia Archeologiczna
Dominat
and revealed
several phases of occupation on the site, spanning from the Bronze Age until the mo¬
dern period. Most of the discoveries date to the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age, and can
be attributed to the
Lusatian
culture. The unearthed archaeological material (pottery

fragments) represents forms typical of the classic phase of the
Górnośląsko-Mało-
polska group of this culture, which dates to Bronze Age Period V-HaC. For the so-called
Kielce
sub-group which developed in the
Nida
Basin, this phase is sometimes referred
to as
Nagłowice-Balice IH-Bocheniec
III (Gedl
1982).
The classic phase lasted from the
9th until the 7th century
ВС.
It cannot be ruled out that at least some of the materials
from Warzyn can be dated to a slightly later period, namely to HaD.
Ceramic material from Warzyn was divided into groups corresponding to tablewa¬
re (A
- 108
fragments of bowls, cups and vases) and kitchenware (B
- 238
fragments
of pots and plates-clay discs). A single fragment of a vessel used in salt-making was
also identified (C
-
a fragment of a cup-shaped beaker) (fig.
12;
plate I-IV, VIII-IX).
The most interesting artefact discovered at Warzyn is a clay bread-shaped idol (fig.
13-14;
plate IX:g). It is one of four such artefacts known from the territory of Poland,
and one of approximately

in Europe. It was found in a cultural layer in the trench
designated as sector
6
(fig.
6).
In plan, the idol resembles a rectangle with rounded
corners; its transversal and longitudinal cross-sections are oval. The upper part is
incomplete, which makes the precise determination of its height impossible. The idol
was probably originally slightly more than
60
mm high (the preserved part:
43
mm).
It is
18
mm wide and
14
mm thick. The object is made of well fired clay which shows
no discernible intentional temper. The ceramic mass is hard and homogenous, and
the surface is quite smooth, of a light brown colour. There is a funnel-shaped apertu¬
re on the upper side, having a width of
5
mm in the widest place and
5
mm deep. Be¬
low the aperture, along the longitudinal axis, three grooves have been incised, each

mm long and approximately
1
mm wide and deep, which end in a
11
mm long
transversal groove. The three longitudinal grooves also continue above the apertu¬
re. The bread-shaped idol from Warzyn belongs to the group of poorly decorated
specimens. It finds its best analogy in the artefact discovered in
Kraków-Bieżanów,
which is only slightly larger and reveals nearly identical decoration
(Przybyła
2009).
Similar forms can also be found in Slovakia, on the Madarovce culture settlements at

Nitransky
Hrádok and Veselé.
The idols discovered there are similar in shape, and
have one funnel-shaped aperture and two incised grooves. Finds of bread-shaped
idols in Europe are clustered in northern Italy, in the territory occupied by the Polada
culture, and on the middle Danube, in the
Madarovce, Věteřov
and
Böheimkirchen
cultures. A minor concentration of idols can also be noticed in Romania, in the
Girla
Mare culture. The finds from northern Italy and the middle Danube date to period
A2-B1, while the Romanian cluster is believed to be younger and linked with period

in P.Reinecke s chronological system. Moreover, single bread-shaped idols were di¬
scovered in Poland, Bohemia, Germany and Croatia. In the territory of Poland, idols
have been discovered at
Piłat-Oszczywilk, Biskupin,
and
Kraków-Bieżanów.
Geogra¬
phical proximity and formal analogies suggest linking the finds from Warzyn and
Kraków-Bieżanów
with the cluster on the middle Danube. Bread-shaped idols from
the latter cluster date to the late period A2 and period Bl of the Bronze Age. This
timespan is well synchronised with the classic phase of the Trzciniec culture. In that
phase, the influence of the Madarovce culture can be noticed in the Trzciniec culture
in western
Małopolska,
which speaks for linking the finds of bread-shaped idols with
the Trzciniec culture. A detailed analysis of the context of discovery of the idols from
Poland gives no clear answer with regards to the question of their cultural attribu¬
tion. The discovery of a bread-shaped idol at Warzyn, on the site where the
Lusatian
culture material clearly prevails, is one more argument for reconsidering the possi¬
bility of dating specimens from Poland to the late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age
and relating them to the
Lusatian
culture. However, the idol was found in a layer, not
within a feature, and the presence of the Trzciniec culture on the site has been con¬
firmed
(1
fragment of pottery).
Most of the interpretations proposed for these idols in the literature emphasise
their cult and ritual role. As an example, one can mention here the study by
0.
Ca-
stiglioni
(1976),
who believes they were talismans. J. Paulik connects them with the
solar cult (Fogel,
Langer 1999, 86).
On the other hand,
W. Szafrański
(1993)
regards
bread-shaped idols as symbols of goddess of fertility. G.
Bandi
(1974)
ascribes them
the role of a carrier of information related with trade (type and amount of goods).
Among other theories, one can mention D. Miller s hypothesis positing that bread-
-shaped idols were symbols of prestige (Fogel,
Langer 1999, 86).
An interesting con¬
cept was put forward by J. Fogel and J.
Langer (1999),
who proposed that the decora¬
tion on the idols is a notation of a base-12 numeral system.

archaeological features were discovered in the site and most yielded pottery
attributable to the
Lusatian
culture. The remaining features that produced no archa¬
eological material should most likely be linked with the same culture (fig.
8-11;
plate
I-VII). Most frequent among the features were pits of various types while postholes
also formed a numerous group. Pits approximately circular in plan and with a diame¬
ter ranging from
1
to
2
metres can be described as storage- or waste pits. They usu¬
ally were circular or oval in plan, ca
0.5
m
in diameter and ca
0.5
m
deep. Moreover,
short segments of two narrow ditches were discovered,
0.3
m
wide and
0.2
m
deep.
Along with the series of ceramic artefacts linked with the
Lusatian
culture, the
excavations at Warzyn also produced a small assemblage of

flint objects (plate X).
All of them were discovered in the layers of soil run-off, and were scattered over the

explored area. The discussed assemblage contains no diagnostic forms, although it
was found in a clearly homogenous context of the
Lusatian
culture. The connection
with known Early Iron Age flint production can be seen in artefacts made of erratic
flints and in splinter technique. The presence of a disc core is also an important tech¬
nological aspect in this context (plate X:i).
Due to the rescue character of the excavations at
Warzyn Pierwszy,
site
7
has only
been investigated to a limited extent (fig.
5).
Its size remains unknown, as only the
northern and southern borders have probably been identified. The unique discovery
of a bread-shaped idol may be an argument for conducting more extensive excava¬
tions on the site which would allow us to put this extraordinary artefact in a precise
chronological context and to shed more light on its interpretation.
