Summary
“Inventory of prejudices” contributes to general discussion on transforma-
tion of the Czech society and freely follows on Inventory of Values (Prudky
a kol. 2009).
In our Inventory we focus on analysis and interpretation of attitudes to-
ward chosen marginalized groups, concretely homeless people, foreigners
and Roma people. Our approach to research is based on in-depth theoretical
framework. We show different understanding of what do attitude or preju-
dice mean and how these are investigated in sociology. The work of Gordon
W. Allport (and his followers) serves us as the most inspirational source.
However it is preferably used within social psychology it is very well appli-
cable in sociology too.
Allport developed so called contact theory or hypothesis. It presupposes
that intergroup contact leads to prejudices alleviation under specific con-
ditions.
As methodological support we used mixed research design which is not
usual in the connection with prejudiced attitudes. In our case we used se-
quential complementary design. We started with a broad secondary analysis
of relevant surveys both national and international (e.g. CWM, Eurobarom-
eter, EVS, ISSP, most of them are available Czech Social Science Data Archive
or/and ZACAT - GESIS Online Study Catalogue). We continued with own
qualitative research in form of semi-structured interviews. We did 36 inter-
views with broad spectrum of participants. Specific sub-group of participants
consisted of people involved in social services area and we assumed their
more positive attitudes toward given groups.
It showed that prejudiced attitudes relate only rarely with traditional so-
cio-demographic indicators (age, gender, education, etc.). A greater poten-
tial for explanation of attitudes seems have intergroup contact, preferably
in form of friendship. Yet, as meta-analysis of surveys had shown, questions
of structure, intensity of contacts are missing.
Attitudes towards three groups under investigation are lead by conviction
that “other” should be those who have to adapt as much as possible to the
Czech society. In addition, participants condition personal and institutional:
help as personal and institutional: if only individuals exert every effort they
deserve some help. Participants with social service background are a notable
exception; they see problems of groups as consequences of society injustice
and not exclusively individual failure.
We assume that non-tolerant (xenophobic) attitudes toward “others” do
not appear only in recent years, those are rather long-term position which has
tendency to become significantly worse rather than (gradually) improve.
